Bugatti pays homage to aviation legends of the past with a limited-run Chiron Sport special edition called ‘Les Legendes Du Ciel.’
Every automotive monolith of today has one thing in common; they all had humble beginnings. And surprisingly, the same goes for Bugatti, too. Its tale goes all the way back back to 1910. Ettore Bugatti first found his niche in the field of aviation, and from 1915 onwards, he engineered aircraft engines for the sole purpose of breaking speed records.
In 1937, while already an established manufacturer of exclusive automobiles, he decided to build a plane for the specific purpose of racing it against one of its sports cars. From its inception, Bugatti always had a special relationship with planes and the aviation industry.
Bugatti CEO Stephen Winkelmann said, “It is therefore almost an obligation for us today to pay tribute to the legends of that time and dedicate a special edition to them.”
The special edition Chiron Sport is named ‘Les Legendes du Ciel,’ meaning “Legends of the Sky in French, and production is limited to only 20 vehicles. It is adorned with a special livery in matt-grey ‘Gris Serpent’ paint, similar to 1920s aircrafts’ exteriors.
A white stripe extends longitudinally from the tip of the nose to the rear spoiler. Adding to the limited edition look, a ‘Les Legendes du Ciel’ badge is printed on both front wings. The border around the side skirts features the French tricolor ‘Bleu-Blanc-Rouge’ and contrasts nicely with the carbon fiber.
The distinctive gloss black horseshoe front grille is made of deep-drawn aluminum and laser-cut to form a pattern inspired by aerobatics flight formations.
Coming to the interiors, Bugatti did not skimp on even the smallest details in the pursuit of exquisiteness. As soon as the doors are opened, drivers are welcomed into a plush interior upholstered in fine Gaucho leather with contrasting aluminum inserts.
Door panel even feature sketches illustrating the fabled race between the Bugatti Type 13 and the Nieuport 17 aircraft — two incredible machines still serving as the rudimental building blocks of today’s technical masterpieces.
The Chiron Sport ‘Les Legendes Du Ciel’ has the same power plant as the standard Chiron, a monstrous 8.0 liter W16 producing 1,500 PS of power and 1,180 lb-ft of torque. According to Bugatti, if everything goes according to plan (nothing is less certain these days), the production should begin in late 2020-early 2021.
Worth mentioning, the Chiron Sport ‘Les Legendes du Ciel’ comes with a whopping €2.88 million price tag!
